This is just weird - 2007/10/09 17:19 I spun up some cormo roving I got at MDS&W and dyed it in various shades of blue (this isn't the weird part yet.) After it was dyed I washed it quite thoroughly till the water ran clear. Then hung it to dry. After it dried I knit it into a sweater that also incorporated some turquoise and navy blue yarns.

Here is the weird part: when I blocked it the navy section left no stains at all, the turquoise left turquoise stains on the towel, the hand dyed section left PINK stains . Where in the world did the pink come from???

Re:This is just weird - 2007/10/18 21:36 What is MDS&W and what dye did you use? If you fall off, get back on and try again.

MDS&W is short for Maryland Sheep and Wool Festival. I think it was mostly Wiltons but there might have been some easter egg or other food colorings too. I should probably keep better track of these things.

Re:This is just weird - 2007/11/02 11:59 There is a food color, Red number three that is in violets and blues and all sorts of colors. Probably that is the culprit.

What happens with R#3 is that is seems to absorb, but really just hangs out on the surface, only to wash out later. It acts REALLY weird.

If you want to use R#3 then start with a VERY small amount of acid, let it soak for 30 min, add a tea or maybe a tablespoon after 30 min to an hour and see what happens, if it doesn't get any more pink, then the red has been absorbed and you can add the normal amount of vinegar. Then the blue or whatever other color will absorb. Tricky stuff, I submitted an article to Knitty about all this, BUT THEY DON'T KNOW IF THEY WANT IT ARRRGH! LOL. But anyway, that is the info you need.
