I'd like to know why? - 2007/05/24 03:07 I admire men who do any craft, but, i seriously have never understood why, when a man does something seen normally as a womans thing we tend to revere them for it. For example we tend to look up to a male chefs, male craft people like Kaffe Fasset, The crochet dude, the boy that spins, the man that knits. We buy the books watch the TV shows and make a fuss, but how many women get the same attention when doing a typically male oriented thing?.How many women have TV shows and books and are revered for being mechanics, pilots and race car drivers. Think about it. Do you ever wonder why? Is it just a cultural thing because in the western society women and men can do things previously taboo in other cultures.Where male and female places in society are much more defined by gender?

Re:I'd like to know why? - 2007/05/24 05:19 My first thought was "well, we just got the long end of the stick on this one..." but I don't really think that's true.

There have been a lot of women who have received a lot of publicity for doing "man" things. Amelia Erhart comes to mind. There's also a female driver on the NASCAR race circuit (don't know her name - I'm not a race fan).

I think the main reason is that women (in western society) have been making a point to do "man" things for a long time - if for no other reason than to prove they can and to show that men and women are equal. So, when it happens now, it's not that remarkable. On the other hand, men haven't been trying to do "woman" things, so when a man does it successfully it garners a lot more attention because it's novel.

That's my two cents anyhow. Probably all it's worth

Re:I'd like to know why? - 2007/05/24 05:52 We never meant to come across this way, we don't see any difference in men and women at S&w. But there are men doing this, and we want them to read the mag too. We don't want to exclude anyone, or place one over the other. We encourage everyone, regardless of gender.

TV is just nuts, so I don't watch it. People get all crazy about all sorts of things related to Tv, but I don't think that's so much the case in everyday life.
Tv people, are just making a buck, and the population just follows along I guess.

I tend to look up to people like Mother Teresa, Gandi and other men and women who tried to change things to make a better, more beautiful world for all of us. You don't generally find that type in Hollywood imho.

Re:I'd like to know why? - 2007/05/25 02:39 Beau thanks for your point of view. I find it interesting that when most people asked this kind of question even females they tend to think of famous women in the past and also have trouble with naming women in the present. I also couldn't tell you the name of any women jockeys or any women mechanics or race car drivers in the present in my own country.I also hope i didn't offend you as i wasn't trying to maybe its my brusque Aussie way of putting things.Sorry.

Re:I'd like to know why? - 2007/05/25 04:36 My apologies are also in order it seems. Because it was posted here, I thought that perhaps you misunderstood our goal with the men's room. This is a very controversal issue here in America, and so I was on the "OH NO WE MADE SOMEONE MAD" frame of mind lol

I think a lot of this stuff is related to the media. (get ready here it comes ) I think that they do things totally wacked out, and I do see what you mean about high profile people. I think that women have lost a lot of dignity and respect over the last 40 years. The real irony is this is what we were persuing in the first place. I think many women struggle in our culture to have an identity that makes sense to them.

In the media, the things that are glorified about women are not all that noteworty. Skinny, beautiful, trashy or large breasts. Not whether they can do someting. My Mom ran a chainsaw, woodworking tools, and taught me all that, but that sort of thing is not glorified in our culture. It's all about a plastic facade of looks, money and other stupid stuff.

Luckily I think the regular people aren't so bad about this. I think out in the real world, people, especially men do admire women, but are less likly to comment on it.
