Uneven yarn - 2007/09/03 12:40 How do you avoid getting small lumps or uneven yarn at the beginning of every draft draw? Is it different with different fibers? I get more of the uneven ness with BFL and less with merino. Any ideas?

Re:Uneven yarn - 2007/09/09 23:33 Try predrafting your fiber a little more, but keeps your hands cloesr together as you go along (like just a little shorter than the staple length of the fiber). That helps prevents clumps of the fiber. Hope that helps a little!

Re:Uneven yarn - 2007/09/10 07:52 I've noticed that with my spinning, too... The start of a draft seems to be just a bit heavier than the end. But I've found that once plied, it's not really an issue.

Re:Uneven yarn - 2007/09/11 15:55 You know, this could be a couple of things...

With the BFL vrs Merino issue, then it could be staple length, as spinninmamma suggested. However, for ME I find that putting my hands a little farther apart helps.

The thing about spinning is that, your hands have to learn what to do, then one day, it's just right, and you can't really explain it.

You might try some different drafting techniques. I "hope" to have a drafting article up this issue, but I haven't written it yet, and well I may not get to it in time lol.

Different fibers draft better with different draws. Merino is a good for a medium backward draw, where as BFL, Shetland and other longer wools might do better with a long draw.

experiment with different draws and drafting, try dividing your roving into slivers, move your hands closer, then farther apart. You should be able to find the answer.
If you fall off, get back on and try again.

Re:Uneven yarn - 2007/09/15 17:51 Sometimes its because you aren't pinching your fiber evenly as you draft also.when you pinch your fiber to stop the twist comming back you are probably without realising relaxing your pinch. This will be where your 'lumps' are getting through. If you are tired or your hands are after spinning a while you tend to do it more.
