An Epiphany - 2007/08/11 22:38 For more experienced spindlers this may be a blinding flash of the obvious, but for me, it was an epiphany.

I've learned to Navajo 3-ply on my drop spindle, and as a result, I've been able to expand the range of yarn sizes that I can get... In any event, in order to 3-ply from the same cop, I've had to wind off the spindle onto my ball winder, and then ply from my ball winder.

Well, last week at craft camp, I was able to acquire some more spindles (). So, I was trying to figure out how I could ply from one spindle to the other, easily.

Since I wind my yarn on in reel fashion... first winding down the spindle and then up... I've found that this makes it easier to get the single or the yarn off... It came to me... I needed something that I could set the spindle in upside-down, that would be stable enough to allow me to pull the single without tipping over or sliding around.

I was in town the other day, running an errand across from the hardware/lumber yard, on my way to a sit and knit (or spin, in my case) in Rolla when it hit me... PVC PIPE!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So, I go into the hardware store with my spindle (still attached to my roving like some sort of wooly imbilical cord). I show the clerks my spindle and expain that I want a piece of pipe that will be wide enough to accomodate the whorl and about 2/3 the length of the spindle. They look at me strangely... So I proceed to demonstrate drop spindle, and give a brief history...

One clerk measures my whorl... finds a piece of pipe that we try, and goes to cut it. When she returns, I ask how much I owe, and she says, with as much work as I'm doing there, I can have it for free...

Well, tonight, I gave it a whirl (pun intended)... and it works!!! Also works well for skeining... I'm ecstatic!!!

Re:An Epiphany - 2007/08/13 00:11 If you got three and glued them to a board you would have a very handy lazy kate and could do three ply from the singles. Jennifer

Re:An Epiphany - 2007/08/13 22:19 I use a shoebox with holes punched on either end. Put the spindle in and ply away. Cheap, easy that's the way I like things lol.

You can even duct tape a rubber band to go around the spindle shaft to put some tension on. I guess I should write a tutorial about it.
If you fall off, get back on and try again.
