Re:Woolen v Worsted, Left v. Right - 2007/05/22 05:58 I pinch with the left and draft with right as well. I think it just is whatever works for you. I can use both hands for most things, so I use left hand pinch right hand draft for even nice yarns, and right hand pinch left hand draft for novelty and bumpy stuff.

It's all just personal preference.

Re:Woolen v Worsted, Left v. Right - 2007/05/22 13:41 I find it easier to think of it as 'front hand' and back' hand' and I write all my instructions with that in mind. I nearly always spin with my right hand in front, and I am right handed, but I know right-handers who do it the other way around.

I'm inclined to agree with Dawn that it might be difficult to make a long draw work using your right hand as the drafting hand - but in my experience, if you have a preferred way of doing something you'll always find a way

Well as a matter of fact I do have a single treadle Saxony wheel, and as another matter of fact, I did find a way! Just had to adjust the seating arrangement a bit and I can work a good 18" from the orifice with no strain at all.

Thanks all for the comments

Re:Woolen v Worsted, Left v. Right - 2007/06/19 15:41 I'm a right handed spinner who keeps her right hand as the 'back' hand.

Depending on the fiber I'm using, I'll draft forward with my left hand, draft backward with my right hand, long drawl with my right hand.

The only time I wish I was better at the long drawl is when I'm working on my Great Wheel.

If your Great Wheel is like most I've seen, your spindle is on the left as you face the wheel, as Great Wheels were designed to be used by right-handed spinners, holding the wool in their left hand and turning the wheel with their right. It's the one wheel that really does need to be set up differently for left/right handedness, because if you try to use it the other way, you're reaching over yourself to turn the wheel and this can interfere with your draw. If you can find someone else to turn the wheel for you while you draw out, check to see if this might be at the root of your problem.

Re:Woolen v Worsted, Left v. Right - 2007/06/20 14:57 You are correct Dawn. The spindle of my Great Wheel is on my left.

When I was describing the different ways I draft (I draft different ways depending on the fiber I'm using!) it was for working with one of my treadle wheels, not on the great wheel!

I spin 'okay' on my Great Wheel, just not as consistant as i like to be!

These are 3 of my 4 wheels.
