WWYD with 8 oz handspun yak - 2007/08/07 17:59 I've been spinning up 8 oz of yak down for the last few months and have already plied about 260 yards of it into a worsted weight 3 ply yarn. I estimate that when I am finished spinning and plying it I will have between 600 and 800 yards.

It is a natural dark brown color and soft as can be. I've been spinning it woolen and it already has a slight fuzzy halo even though I haven't finished it yet. I imagine that once it blooms in washing it will be even fluffier.

So...
What would you do with it?
Scarf and hat; mittens; shawl?

I'm leaning towards knitting b/c it is a nice round 3 ply, but I'm open to other things and would welcome links to anything you think would be right for this scrumptious yarn.

TIA
Jennifer

Re:WWYD with 8 oz handspun yak - 2007/08/07 22:30 Well...since you're asking, I would knit it up into a nice pair of gloves, because you know, there are people out there who have gotten frost bite before, and their hands get really really cold, even in mildly chilly weather. These gloves should fit fairly snuggly so that a leather outer shell can be worn over them (to protect them!). Further, they should fit a fairly large man's hand. If there's any left after that, a pair of socks in US size 12 and a nice scarf - six to seven feet long and eight inches wide or so, that way it'll fit a really tall person. Once it's all done, you should definitely consider sending it to 24600 E. 1000 Rd...er, well...if you get that far, let me know and I'll re-send the address

Re:WWYD with 8 oz handspun yak - 2007/08/08 08:51 Do you see what I have to deal with? Thank goodness he's learning to knit for himself. Stuff for him takes FOREVER! If you fall off, get back on and try again.

Re:WWYD with 8 oz handspun yak - 2007/08/08 14:18 He'de be happy to wear the same things, but being the bad wife that I am, I haven't made anything for him. To be fair I never make anything for myself either. Always for the kids. I did knit myself one sock, working on the second. If you fall off, get back on and try again.
