In praise of drink mix - 2007/07/17 06:27 All hail drink mix!
I speak, of course, of Kool-Aid, Crystal Light, Fruit Punch mix, and any and all generic store brands of these powdered drink mixes.
Due to limited kitchen space, I dye fiber and yarn exclusively with food dye products. One can produce a wide range of colors with drink mix. Don't quite like the color? Add a few drops of food coloring until it meets your standards!
Add several "glugs" of white vinegar, bring the whole lot to a boil on the stove, turn the stove off, and Bob's your uncle!
It's non-toxic, and you don't need a separate set of equipment for dyeing versus food preparation.

Re:In praise of drink mix - 2007/07/17 08:39 I've dabbled with food dye.. and I also like the fact that you don't have to have a bunch of seperate equipment...

LOVE your nic, btw... I haven't gotten up the courage to knit in church, yet...

Re:In praise of drink mix - 2007/07/17 18:07 I like to dye using exclusively food based dyes as well. For a more natural look I like the wide selction of fruit juices they have at Trader Joes. I also use easter egg and other food colorings often.

I use my pyrex in the microwave

Re:In praise of drink mix - 2007/08/24 17:55 What I've done in the past is mix a couple of packages of unsweetened Kool Aid in jelly jars... and added a tablespoon or so of white vinegar..

Then I drape the roving or the yarn in several in my microwave, and nuke them for about 2 minutes at a time.

Then, I hang it to dry on my clothes line.

So far, with protein fibers, it has been colorfast.

You can google Kool Aid dyeing, and get a wealth of information.
