WPI - Wraps Per Inch Gauge - 2007/06/28 23:09 This little device measures the grist, or thickness of a yarn. There are the small flat, wooden devices, or a wooden, turned dowel shape gauge. Even a marked-off pencil can do the same thing. Check out:

Re:WPI - Wraps Per Inch Gauge - 2007/06/29 02:45 I have a pencil which is marked in cm and inches like a ruler - it's great.

What I really want though is a bunch of those little oblong ones that they have in all the photos in Spin.Off they look so much fancier!

Thanks... but I have a question.. it says to wrap around a pencil or a ruler. Wouldn't there be a difference in the WPI based on the difference in dimension between the pencil and the ruler?

Re:WPI - Wraps Per Inch Gauge - 2007/06/29 07:17 There will be no difference because you're not measuring the length of yarn you're wrapping (which will change if the ruler is thicker) but the thickness of each individual strand of yarn.

As you wrap it around they build up neatly next to each other until you have filled an inch - then you count how many strands you have wrapped.

It's a quicker way to work out the thickness of your yarn than knitting a swatch - lots of spinners use is at as a measure rather than gauge. (The article Masadaspindle linked to shows the how different wpi measurements match different gauges)

Re:WPI - Wraps Per Inch Gauge - 2007/06/29 10:14 Thanks!!

Is there a way to calculate approximate yardage if you know the size and weight of your yarn?
