Top Whorl Spindle - 2007/06/20 12:53
The top whorl spindle (high-whorl spindle) was originally used for spinning tightly spun wools for rug weaving. Of course the spindles were longer and heavier to accommodate the harsher wools that were used. But with time, the top whorl spindle has been scaled down for fine wool spinning but can still be spun by rolling the shaft on the thigh. This is the only handspindle I use. It is fast and hand-friendly as you do not twirl the spindle with your fingers. Rolling the spindle shaft on your thigh creates a faster and longer twisting spindle in comparision to a hand-twirled spindle, yet you can still produce smooth and soft yarns.
