Spinning from the fold - 2007/06/19 22:52 What is that? I've seen it mentioned several times, and have no clue what that means...

Re:Spinning from the fold - 2007/06/19 23:33 You fold the fiber over your finger and draft from there. It makes more sence if you see it demonstrated. Jennifer

Re:Spinning from the fold - 2007/06/20 10:03 for a roving, instead of starting from one end or the other, you fold the roving in the middle and lay over your index finger. You draft from that point.

Re:Spinning from the fold - 2007/06/20 12:24 Thanks! What's the advantage to doing in that way, and does one join fiber in the same manner?

Re:Spinning from the fold - 2007/06/20 13:26 A nice woolen yarn.

I've never been able to master this drafting technique though.

It tends to be used more often when spinning on a wheel than when spinning with a drop spindle, as you do more pre-drafting of short sections of roving before actually spinning it when using a drop spindle. The advantage is that you get very fine control over short/slick fibers while using a long draw, because the fibers are laying perpendicular to the twist.

When you get to the end of that bit of roving, you simply break off another piece of roving, tease a few fibers out from the middle of the next bit, and do your join in the regular way.
