Hello from South Georgia - 2007/06/18 19:52 Hi everyone, I found you by following links while researching spinning. I made a drop spindle with what I could find in our town but don't think it will do so I am waiting on the three that I ordered to get here! I see that Cyndi has already made it over, she is my sponsor on the 12 step program to stop making too much soap.

I hope to learn and share with like minded people.

Re:Hello from South Georgia - 2007/06/18 21:49 Welcome! I'm glad you found us, but I have some bad news for you, and your twelve step program. We're planning a "for the kids" article on making felted soap...we'll just hope you don't fall off the wagon

Re:Hello from South Georgia - 2007/06/19 07:36 Noooo problem, I have plenty of soap on hand. I do need to make some more creamy butter and some rice scrub. I won't be able to stop everything to indulge my newest addiction, just have to be a good time manager!

Re:Hello from South Georgia - 2007/06/19 15:51 Hey ya Deb!

I felt since I got you into the mad addiction of soaping that I had to throw you a lifeline.

You won't completely stop soaping BUT you're life is about to be turned on it's head by your fiber addiction.

Sure, with soap, you have the colors and additives and viola! you have soap that you can, um, wash with.

Now, introduce the fiber!! With that soap, you can take plain (or dyed) fiber and take it to a whole new dimension!

You'll be able to take fiber from start (fleece) to finished article and do all the steps yourself. And what choices you have to make a long the way!!!

Best thing is! There is no lye to deal with, no way to really goof it up! It is truly a beautiful art form!

So, did you get that box of fiber I sent you yet??

Re:Hello from South Georgia - 2007/06/19 21:34 Cyndi, I got the fiber and thought that I had let you know that it got here and how excited I am .

The only wooden wheels that I could find were 1 1/2 inches, smallest cup hook was 1/2 inch and it just didn't feel right so I ordered three spindles. After searching more on the net, I went back to town and bought some fender washers, found the rubber gaskets that I couldn't find earlier so I am ready to test out the spindles tomorrow. Now watch the ones I ordered come tomorrow too.

Do you think I should start with the Romney? I traded some scrub and cream for a pound Australian wool from a lady that is closing shop in Indiana. When I told her about the samples I was putting in her box, she sent samples of Angora, Alpaca, camel, washable wool and some pretty dyed wool. She is an enabler too!

Re:Hello from South Georgia - 2007/06/20 07:31 CAMEL!! You got CAMEL??? I've heard the staple length on that is short, short, short!

The romney roving is a good one to start with. Pre-draft it. I get the best results on a drop spindle using the spin & park method.
