It Boggles The Mind - 2007/06/28 23:58 I am a little bit far away from everyone yet I feel so close through this Forum and it has made the distance seem somewhat less. I am a spinner, dyer, feltmaker & knitter for over 20 years; founder & 1st Pres. of the Peachtree Spinners Guild in Atlanta where I lived for 27 years; founder & Pres. for 9 years of the Israel Fiberarts Guild in Israel, & presently teaching fiberarts to children & adults. I have been an on/off knitter for many years recently returning to "heavy" knitting 2 years ago. In our country there were only a small number of knit shops until recently mushrooming all over the country. Nothing in comparison to the States, but a significant change that demanded on-going lessons and new products and equipment. During several trips back to the US, I was completely overwhelmed at the "jewel-boxes" of knit shops that have sprung up all over the country. They are no longer the usual knit stores supplying equipment, yarn and magazines rather have become knitting centers of like-minded people meeting to learn, talk, purchase and organize on-going activities. I visited stores in Long Beach, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Albuquerque, NM and Atlanta and was totally overwhelmed. It is to each and every impassioned knitter that we have to thank for encouraging the fiber community of today. It is at its greatest.
