Clockwise/Counter-clockwise Query - 2007/05/15 19:51 Hello All,

The best advice I've ever heard is to spin/knit/dance like no one is looking. And I agree whole heartedly. As long as you're producing something that you like and pleases you, who cares?

Left to my own devices, I've cobbled together a process to spin a fairly even thread that I like, spun counter-clockwise. After being introduced to this site and it's informative text directing the new spinner to spin clockwise, I'm wondering what I'm going to need to look out for when I go to ply my thread. I was planning on producing a 2-ply yarn by spinning my counter-clockwise spun thread, clockwise.

This should just make the final skein twist to the right as opposed to the left, shouldn't it? Is there anything else that I should watch out for? Will this affect the weaving of the yarn? (I was planning on weaving it into a shawl on a nailed frame.)

Re:Clockwise/Counter-clockwise Query - 2007/05/15 20:05 Alistche,
TRADITIONALLY we spin clockwise and ply counterclosckwise. You can do it the other way, and the only difference is that you will end up with an S twist final yarn, with Z twist singles. It will not affect how it's used, to my knowledge.

However, weaving is often done with singles for weft and warp, using Z for one and S for the other. This allows the fabric to "balance". The two twists balance each other out. I am not a weaver as of yet, perhaps next issue, but this is what I have been told by people using the triangle looms.

After plying just be sure your yarn is balanced, that is to say not over or under plied, and it should work fine.

Good Luck with your beautiful shawl, and thanks for posting.
If you fall off, get back on and try again.

Re:Clockwise/Counter-clockwise Query - 2007/05/17 03:49 The most important thing is that you are consistent if you try to ply two singles that were spun in the opposite direction from each other it won't work. By having a standard that everyone follows it is possible for one person to spin one single while someone else spins another and a third person plies. Jennifer
